Drug name: Generic Diflucan (fluconazole)

Therapeutic effects:

Generic Diflucan is an antifungal medication containing Fluconazole. Fluconazole belongs to a group of antimycotic agents called “azoles”. Fluconazole is a potent selective inhibitor of sterols in fungal cells. Fluconazole works by inhibiting enzyme 14α- dimethylase which is necessary for ergosterol production. Ergosterol is one of the most important component of yeast and fungal cell membranes possessing the same function that cholesterol serves in animal cells. By inhibiting ergosterol, Fluconazole changes permeability of fungal cells resulting in lysis of microorganisms.

Indications:

Fluconazole is indicated in the following conditions:

Cutaneous Candidiasis
Candidiasis of the oral cavity (oral thrush), urogenital system, lungs, heart.
Vaginal candidiasis caused by Candida albicans
Candidal balanitis
Fungal infections caused by Cryptococcus fungi (cryptococcosis), including cryptococcal meningitis and infections affecting the lungs or skin.
Prophylaxis of fungal infection in patients with weakened immune system
Prophylaxis of a disease caused by Cryptococcus fungi, eg cryptococcal meningitis, in patients with AIDS.
